The writer of the book of Proverbs said, "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18). Viewing ourselves in the mirror of self-importance reflects a distorted image. Self-evaluation positions us for failure.

The antidote to the poison of arrogance is true humility that comes from God. It's better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud. In the scriptures Jesus told His disciples, "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave, just as the Son of Man does not come to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:26-28 ).
