Southern Living Names Louisiana Town ‘Best Vacation Spot’
When you live in Louisiana why would you even need a vacation? We've got the fun and flirtatious behavior of New Orleans, the laid-back charm of Natchitoches, the casinos of Lake Charles, and the peace and tranquility of Magdalen Square in Abbeville. Why would you ever need a break from that?
Those are just some of the joys that we "regular customers" here in Louisiana get to experience on a daily or at least a day trip basis. That's one of the joys of living in a relatively small state, getting from place to place is easy and economical. And it seems as if each region of the state and each town within those regions have their own unique set of charms.
The folks at Southern Living Magazine are always on the lookout for "charming towns" as they create articles and information that help all of us explore the southern part of the United States and all its charms. The magazine recently published online a list of the Best Vacation Spots in Every Southern State.
The article crafted by the author Kaitlyn Yarborough explored interesting vacation locales in 13 Southern States. I was not aware that we consider Delaware and West Virginia to be southern but if Kaitlyn says they are in the south then who am I to argue, right?
As you might expect some of the usual suspects topped the list in Mississippi where Biloxi was chosen as the best vacation spot for that state. In Texas, Southern Living opted to honor San Antonio, so no real surprises there.
The surprises, at least to me were in the choice of Eureka Springs in Arkansas as the Best Vacation Spot in that state and Fairhope chosen for the same honor in Alabama. Both of those cities are fine destinations but they are often overshadowed by other communities that have a more popular story.
What is the Best Vacation Spot in Louisiana?
No, it's not New Orleans and no it's not even Grand Isle or Holly Beach. The Southern Living choice for the best vacation spot in Louisiana is a much smaller community. It's known for its food eclectic shopping and Cajun charm. No, there isn't an ocean but there is a bayou and yes, even during a tough season you can still find crawfish in fabulous Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.
Breaux Bridge was selected by Southern Living as the Best Vacation Spot in Louisiana because of its laid-back charm, the beautifully preserved downtown area, the incredible cafes and restaurants that feature live music, and of course some of the best Cajun and Creole dishes you will ever experience.
From more modern hotels and accommodations to more rustic cabins and even houseboats a vacation in Breaux Bridge can be whatever you imagine it to be. Just remember to bring your appetite and your dancing shoes because you will use both, a lot.
