The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in 1924. Dressed in colorful costumes, store employees marched to Macy's Herald Square, the flagship store on 34th Street. Professional bands, floats, and live animals from the Central Park Zoo were all on display. Santa Claus was welcomed into Herald Square at the conclusion of the first parade.

It's the second oldest Thanksgiving parade in the USA behind Philadelphia's Thanksgiving Day Parade which began in 1920.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has been broadcasted on national TV on NBC since 1953.
