New Orleans Saints GM Has Puzzling Comments During End Of Season Press Conference
It appears that in 2024, Saints fans could anticipate more of the same. Mickey Loomis, the general manager and executive vice president of the New Orleans Saints, had his yearly press conference on Wednesday to wrap up the season. Loomis doubled down on his decision to not completely go through a complete transition and not fire Head Coach Dennis Allen.
Dennis Allen currently has an overall record of 24-26, which is currently the lowest victory percentage of any head coach in the league. Allen has certainly been under some heat from the fanbase as the Saints have underachieved yet again in 2023.
Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis was very prepared for his end-of-season meeting with the media, he even brought in a notecard of notes on how to defend Dennis Allen.
What was written on the card? It was some prolific Head Coaches and their records of how they did early in their careers.
The coaches that were listed on the notecard were a few very notable guys. Chuck Noll, Bill Belichick, Tom Landry, and Bill Walsh were the coaches on the list. How did those guys start their tenures? Chuck Noll went 1-13, 5-9, and 5-8. Belichick went 6-10, 6-10, and 7-9. Tom Landry went 0-11, 4-9-1, 5-8-1, 4-10, and 5-8-1. Loomis even rattled off the 2-14 and 6-10 records that former 49ers legend Bill Walsh had.
“The easiest thing to do is look at the results and say, ‘Oh no, we’ve got to have a change,' ” Loomis said. “You’ve got to look beyond that. What are the reasons why we were 9-8 instead of 13-4?”
Once Loomis was nearly finished with his spiel. He brought the conversation back to Dennis Allen who has a career record of 24-26.
“My assessment is Dennis Allen is a good coach,”
The team recently relieved Offensive Coordinator Pete Carmichael of his duties earlier in the week, but I think that the real question that Saints fans should be asking is WAS IT ALL ON PETE? How about the offensive line? How about the Saints botching the first few rounds of the last few drafts? The defense has been awful, what's going to change with that? All of those questions are very good and should be asked going forward.
The Saints are also moving into a tough offseason with a lot of questions around a few star players and a tough cap situation. The Saints remain more than $82 million over the projected salary cap for next season. And the franchise was a year removed from overhauling its quarterback situation by bringing in Carr to replace Andy Dalton.
