Love It or Hate It: Why America Celebrates National Candy Corn Day
🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Lake Charles, LA — Since Halloween is tomorrow, we gotta discuss one of the most debated candies out there, yep, it's candy corn. You either love'em or you hate'em, and I've never encountered someone on the fence about them. According to National Day Calendar, October 30th is National Candy Corn Day.
The History of the Candy Corn
Let's take a moment to review the history of this despised confection, which was created in the 1880s by a man named George Renninger of a Philadelphia candy firm.. He came up with this sweet that looked like actual corn kernels, which, honestly, feels pretty clever for a time when most folks were still out there milkin’ cows and plowin’ fields.
But the candy didn’t really take off until 1898, when another company, Goelitz Confectionery, started crankin’ it out by the wagonload. You might not recognize that name now, but you’d sure recognize what they became, Jelly Belly. Yep, the same folks that make those fancy jelly beans are also the ones who’ve been makin’ candy corn for over a century, still usin’ that original recipe that’s basically sugar, corn syrup, and a whole lotta nostalgia.
Now look, I know some of y’all can’t stand the stuff. Every year, I hear folks say it tastes like candle wax or that it’s the fruitcake of Halloween candy. But then there are "those" people that cant get enough.
Now whatever side you’re on, you gotta admit it’s got history. It’s been around this long so its gotta be making money, right? So go ahead and lets all try it one more time just to make sure.
And hey, if you hate it, no worries. More for the rest of us.
