First off, don’t wait till the night it drops into the 40s to turn that thing on. Go ahead and give it a test run now. Flip it over to “heat” and let it blow for a few minutes. It might smell kinda funky at first, that’s just dust burning off after sittin’ all summer. But if it keeps smellin’ weird or starts makin’ noises, it’s time to call in a pro.
