Lake Charles, LA [KNGT-FM] - If you cook gumbo, you need to know about this ASAP. I may have just found one of the greatest inventions ever for Louisiana cooks!

In Louisiana, once the temperatures dip below 70 degrees, you can bet gumbo pots start coming out. Gumbo is a staple around here, and everyone has their own way of making it. Chicken and sausage is a favorite, while others go with seafood, okra, tasso, or a combination of ingredients.

My personal favorite is chicken and sausage gumbo. But if you’ve ever made a pot, you know there’s one annoying problem: grease.

Between the roux and the sausage, grease naturally rises to the top. The challenge is removing it without scooping out a bunch of your delicious gumbo along with it.

In the past, people have used paper towels to absorb the grease or a regular ladle to skim it off. Both methods work, but neither is perfect.

Then I spotted something at the store that stopped me in my tracks: a ladle designed specifically to remove grease.

At first, I thought, “There’s no way this thing actually works.”

Turns out, it does!

Things To Never Put In Your Gumbo

  • Beans

The ladle has a hole in the center. When you place it on top of the gumbo and gently push down, the grease is drawn through the opening and into the ladle while leaving the gumbo behind.

As someone who loves making gumbo, my mind was blown. Where did i get mine you ask? I bought mine at Market Basket grocery store but I know soome people say they have found them on Amazon.

And no, I’m not a spokesperson or trying to sell you anything. I just thought I’d share this little kitchen discovery because if you make gumbo, you might want to give it a try!
